Yes, most likely it is the ignition switch (that's the switch you mentioned at the steering column). Here is a link to a piture of it-

You can buy one at any local parts place. If you have a test light, I'd check it first. As shown in the exploded view, the plug is unique-looking and shouldn't be hard to find. Use my wiring diagrams and a test light to figure out if power is coming out of the switch (and check for power in as well). Here is a link to my wiring diagrams.
Wiring Diagrams
When you find the diagram listing the ign switch, find the connector name (C1, C23, etc) and find the connector on the connector diagram. Hope this helps.
