That's a complicated question. You could put 20 inch rims on a Maverick if you wanted and still be ok...but, you would be looking at a 35 aspect ratio(profile). Basically you need to measure and do some conversions from millimeters to inches. Let's see if I can do this right(probably not).

Measure bead seat to bead seat on the rim. Say it's 14.
Find carcass width(i.e. 205,215,225) Tire width is not tread width. It's the width of the outside hull of the tire at proper inflation and cold. Take your apect ratio. Performance tires are usaully 60's.

-- 205/60/14 would be 205 * .60 = 123 mm. * 2 for top and bottom of tire = 246.
-- 24.6 cm / 2.5 = 9.84 in. + 14 in. rim = 23.84 in.

-- 205/35/20 would be 205 * .35 = 71.75 * 2 = 143.5
-- 14.35 cm / 2.5 = 5.74 in. + 20 in. rim = 25.74

This is an extreme example but if those were 18's the total would be 23.74 compared to 23.84 for the 14's . A perfect match as far as tire sizes go.
