Casting number, IE Ford part number is a cast in, 9 or 10 letter/number, that tells what the part is, you'll find them on heads, cranks, rods, intake/exhaust manifolds, etc. On a Cleveland it's on the right (pass)side under the head mounting surface. Same location for the Modified.
First letter=decade
second number= is the year of that decade
third letter=car intented for
forth letter=division,ie motor, car, etc
first and second are what you want.
Personally, get a 351Wblock, stroke it out a little, and stick 351c/m 2bbl heads on it with a B & A manifold. put in 10 to 1 ratio pistons, and you have the best of both worlds. Lighter weight, better oiling, better heads, C-4 or C-6 trans mounting. Pretty much what the Nascar "basic" engine is. SuperFord mag had a article on a 302 that they did that to, about 12yrs ago, even in mild form the 302 pulled over 340 horses.
: : I had asked this question yesterday, not realizing that the board would be taken down today, so i'm just going to ask again (because i need to know so i can grab this engine!):
: : What are some basic differences to look for to spot the difference between a 351C and a 351M? This is a 2bbl that i've found, runs great doesn't burn oil, but the tag is worn off...i can't tell if it's a cleveland or an M!
: : Thanks for any help,
