Ok here comes a changing the color of the interior information from a guy who has and is actually doing it. I am going from that ugly brown (may have been OK once but mine is really stained) to black. First I removed the door panels, rear seats and rear side panels.
I began by cleaning everything up. Then I bought special ($10) a can vinyl paint. What a waste of cash. Now I switched to the $0.99 Wall-Mart stuff and the out come is great. It takes time but my interior looks as close to brand new as it can. Here are the Tips
1. Light coats of paint above 75f. After about four coats I cleaned off the vinyl with an old “Chore Boy”. Stress old here and some dish soap. The cheap wall mart paint stays sticky even after it is dry. When you clean it off some of the paint may come off but you want that off anyway, the result is absolutely non-sticky and looks great. It took 7 coats for the rear bench and rear back and the last two coats I just cleaned with new shop rag and dish soap. Rinse the soap of really well also.
Remove the door inserts. Bottom up and from nearest to the hinge first. The clips all slide onto the masonite the same way and in the same direction. BTW mine were made by Allied Canadian Industries on 10/02/70. After 30 years the masonite is shot and you will have to make some new. No big deal massonite is about 8 bucks for a 4 by 8 sheet. If your vinyl isn’t torn and is just stained, faded and/or loose from the Masonite like mine, you’re in business. First remove all of the staples from the backside. Gently begin peeling of the vinyl. There will be a thin form backing that must come with the vinyl, do not leave it with the Masonite. The foam is only glued around the edges and along the lines of the pattern and the cut out area. I will finish this later, My lunch hour is about over but the trick I used mad the outcome great.
