My '71 originally came with the 170. I replaced it with a .30 over 250 with 9-1 compression. I went with a Mallory electronic ignition, Clifford dual outlet headers and a Weber DGAV progressive 2 bbl. There are different versions of the cylinder head that have bigger valves. Try to get one of them. I swapped the manual trans for a C-4. The motor has great torque and pretty good horsepower. With the stock 279 gears, I get about 15 mpg in the city and sometimes better than 20 mpg on the freeway. Any serious stop and go traffic really eats up the mpg. Sometimes, I really wish I would have gone for a 302, but with the gas prices in the San francisco Bay area, I needed something that would not kill me on gas.

Watch for carb to hood clearance. The 170/200 carb may not fit on the 250 motor because of the increased deck height. The 170's 1YF Carter carb may look the same, but the 250 ones are generally shorter. If you go with a stock carb and headers on an engine that originally had a egr valve, you will have to block off the egr port. Also, the stock carb will run lean and you will have to rejet.

If you have any other questions, let me know.
