yes, the 302 is the same physically from 68-present. All of the mount locations are the same, as well as the bellhousing. The main difference between your '81 and the early ones is the balance(I think). the only way to tell if your engine is worth rebuilding is to remove the cylinder heads and check the cylinders for a previous overbore. You can simply scrape off the top of one of the pistons, and if it says 20,30,40,60...etc, it's been bored before. But dont give up yet, depending on how bad they are worn, it's possible that it can be brought back to life once again by boring it again. I'm not too sure about the balance though, so maybe someone else on here is. But the '81 engine should bolt right in place in a maverick.
