I do not knock the 300 as a decent engine, HOWEVER it is too LONG and too TALL for a Maverick, thus much modification and it will in NO WAY EVER outperform a mildly "warmed over" 302 V-8. THe low-end torque mentioned runs out so early that it is not justified, SO:
A 302/8 1. Costs less to "hot-rod"
2. FITS much better
3. Has a wider RPM power curve
4. SOUNDS a hell of a lot better
A 300/6 1. Requires LOTS of modification to fit into a Maverick
2. Costs a hell of a lot MORE to "hot-rod"
3. Runs out of "steam" around 1600 RPM
4. Basically sounds like $hit
: i stongly disagree with the "don't do it" post, the 300 is a miraculously stout engine with oodles of performance potential. it is nearly as narrow as a stock 200 or 250 and only a couple of inches longer. popular tranmissions bolt up, etc. i would consider starting with an 87 to 96 efi version as these have pretty good heads and factory split exhaust manifolds. clifford makes intakes, and there are quite a few cams out there. stock mount pads could be used with mid-'60 econoline insulators. with all of the shock tower headaches most of us have on our minds, it's a wonder that this isn't more popular
