A friend of mine has had the same sentiments regarding
Comets and Mavericks for years. He is really not mechanically
inclined, but likes to think that he knows about cars. He asked
me to go with him to look at a '70 Nova SS fixer upper that he was
considering buying. It was all original, vinyl top,
faded red paint, bench seat, column shift A/T. Granted that the
350 4V it came stock with would smoke my stock 138 HP (from factory)
302 A/T Comet GT. But, I've got a cool scoop-Not HVAC floor grates
like the nova SS. I've got high back bucket seats and a floor mounted
shifter-not Grandpas bench seat and boring steering mounted shift.
Mine came with blacked out panels and a sporty stripe package, not dull
looking pinstripes.
It is funny, when I go to salvage yards, I don't even need parts-just like
to browse-The guys tell me that Mavericks and Pintos are the first cars that they
crushed when scrap metal was selling well a few years ago. It's a
shame that people don't see the value compared to the inflated prices
of Mustangs. I know....we need someone to make a movie featuring a
Maverick or Comet!
